Permissions

How can we make eduwikipedia more friendly. Does it have to be set up so that everyone has to register to add a page or add to the list of resources. Could that be a deterrent to possible users?

We need our own .COM

The url to the official eduwikipedia site is not easy to remember. How hard would it be to get our own .com so the site would be eduwikipedia.com That would be great! Any ideas?

What about an obstacles section?

While working on the digital photography section, I realized that if I were presenting Flickr to my teachers then I would discuss the concerns I had with allowing students to use Flickr because I couldn't control the content if something inappropiate appeared. I know we must teach our students how to deal with this but I also don't want a teacher to use it and then we be called on the carpet for the inappropriate use of the tool. So, with all that said, what do you think about an Obstacles section on Eduwikipedia? Do you think we should have one main Obstacles page or one for each section? My first thoughts are for one on each section because the obstacles for blogs are different for Flickr. Let's think about this in our Skype meeting tonight and make a decision.

Another idea for table of contents

I was just reading a post by Amanda Bittinger in Tapped In who was interested in collaborating but didn't know where to get started. What do you think about adding a section in the first part, Web 2.0, that addresses this concern and links to sites where projects are registered? John mentioned one or two in his reply. If Amanda is asking this question then other people are too.

Table of Contents

Today, we meet to finalize the Table of Contents. Our rough draft is on eduwikipedia.wetpaint.com under Table of Contents on the left hand side. We have assigned parts to begin the process of moving the table of contents and adding resources to http://www.connect-learn.net/eduwikipedia I was struggling with how to create a new page on the Eduwikipedia site. I was too spoiled by Wikispaces with the "create new page" button. I read and found the easiest way to do this is to type in the title of the new page you are wanting in the search box on the left navigation bar. It will take you to a page that says something like that page has not been created and asks if you would like to create it. From there it is just like any other wiki program. I am intrigued by learning more html code to make it look good. Learning how to number items in code makes me happy! Anyway, my sections of the Table of Contents are on the official Eduwikipedia site. I have only made one page active to see how to do it. I will not make the other pages active until I am ready to work on them. I would hate for people to come and visit the site with a bunch of empty pages. What do you guys think? I will work more on my sections as soon as TETC (Trussville Educational Technology Conference) is over on Jan. 4.

Another comment worth discussion

Kyle Brumbaugh - Capuchino High School, San Bruno, CA

The idea of having broad categories is easier to deal with during the initial establishment phase of a project like this. I have been toying with the idea of creating a group of short lessons or projects that will provide skill building activities for students to learn how to use, validate and create using the tools of the read/write web. I felt that the finished product could function in one of three ways. First as a course description/syllabus for a course that would introduce and apply the skills necessary for students to be effective 'risk-takers' (Referencing Sheryl's post in response to David Warlick's 'Flat Classroom' idea and looking for a new term.)and learners. Secondly, as a cook book, where teachers could have a group of 'recipies' that they could use to prepare students to use the skills of the read/write web to complete a project for their specific course. Thirdly, as an almanac in a stand-alone classroom, where students would work on a skill a day (15 minutes) or a short series of skills (60 minutes) once a week. The biggest thing to remember in all of this is that many teachers are reluctant to take risks in their classrooms because the may be a false perception of loss of status by the teacher. Therefore, anything that can be done to reduce the potential anxiety for teachers to integrate the skills of the read/write web the better.

'Remember: There is a big difference between teaching thirty years and teaching one year thirty times.'

Comments to think about from Eduwikipedia site

Clarence Fisher shared this concern on Will's blog-- It is worth posting here.

I think this is a fine idea. I’ve created an account (now I just need to figure out how to get Flock to let me post stuff..) My only concern is that this stays focused on topic. Education as a topic is far too huge. I am not interested in a resource that lists hundreds of stories about administration, new policies, etc. if they are not focused on the read / write web. I agree with you that we are getting spread far too thin with too much duplication. There is getting to be no way “in” with stuff scattered far and wide.

In closing, I think this is a great idea, but I would personally like to see it focused closely on topics like change, educational technology, and read / write implications for education. If it gets any larger, it will be too diaphonous to use or hang on to.

ABPC Advanced Project

Jackie, Randy, Juliana, Jon, and I have decided to work together to advance the Eduwikipedia site, http://eduwikipedia.pbwiki.com, that was begun by several other edubloggers to have one central location for 21st Century definitions, examples, links to others, and much more! Randy is creating a Wetpaint website, http://eduwikipedia.wetpaint.com, to use as a place to brainstorm structure ideas for the Eduwikipedia website which is hosted by Jon, create our learning contract, list resources, and to divide job responsibilities.
